Our Historical Church

Ozark First United Methodist Church 2010The new church was completed in 1911 at a cost of $13,000. This is the church that stands at the corner of Fifth and Commercial Streets today. This remarkable structure is arguably the most architecturally distinctive structure in all of Ozark. With its crenellated towers, native cut sandstone, and distinctive stained glass windows, the church is a landmark for all who pass through our town. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

There were no musical instruments in the church when it was built. After much discussion, plans were made to purchase an organ. Many chicken dinners were served by the ladies of the church to raise the money for the organ. It was purchased in 1912 from George Kilgen and Son of St. Louis, Missouri. In 1990 the organ was removed from the church for a complete renovation. It was taken to Ft. Worth and returned in time for Easter services in 1991.

A two-story educational building was added to the church in 1957, and a new parsonage was built next door to the church in 1964. The Gardner Memorial Family Life Center was added in 1997 on the block that is immediately east of the church.
